Togo is a country slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia, snuggled next to Ghana on the West Coast of Africa. Unfortunately, this tiny country has some large hurdles to overcome. A big percentage of the population practices indigenous religions including Voodoo, which is thought to have originated in the region. The status of women in the country is severely low, complicated by the accepted practice of polygamy and the illegal, but common act of female genital mutilation.

We are overjoyed to partner with Bruno and Amy Koumedjra at the Family of Christ School in Vogan, Togo. Our hope is to be a symbol of God’s faithfulness and light in dark circumstances. We desire to show families the love of Christ in a tangible way through this school, through health care, and through physical sustenance. As one of our newest projects we are excited to see the way that God opens doors and bridges barriers in this country.

A turn from pagan gods

Pipi used to worship the thunder god in Togo. In fact, her husband, who has several wives, was a priest for this god. When Pipi became a Christian four years ago, her husband abandoned her and the five children in her care. Without his support, the family was forced to move for lack of rent.

Despite difficult circumstances, Pipi’s family is thriving.

Joseph, her son, was one of the first children to graduate from our elementary school. He is now in 6th grade and continues his tutoring and mentoring while joining the mere 26% of students that attend secondary schooling in Togo.

Bijou, Pipi’s granddaughter, was abandoned by both her mother and father. The twelve year old is a little rough around the edges because of the hardships she has endured, but she is smart and growing quickly in our program.

With your support both Bijou and Joseph are not only receiving an education, but they have a home. We were able to help the family and find them a place to live! Thank you for partnering with us in making a difference in the country of Togo.
